Construction debris removal is a cost every contractor, builder and property manager deals with. In Calgary, what you pay depends heavily on how the debris is sorted. The City charges different rates for mixed waste, drywall, clean wood and metal. This page covers City rates, demolition debris rules, and when a load-based debris pickup beats renting a bin.

City of Calgary rates for construction debris (2026)

MaterialResidential rate
Mixed construction debris (basic sanitary waste)$113 per tonne, or $25 flat under 250 kg
Drywall$90 per tonne
Recyclable wood$90 per tonne
Scrap metal$113 per tonne
Hard-to-handle surcharge (bulky or special-handling loads)$275 per load

The takeaway: separating clean drywall and clean wood from mixed debris lowers disposal costs, and keeping hazardous materials out avoids rejected loads.

How to get rid of construction debris

  1. Sort on site. Keep piles for drywall, clean wood, metal and mixed debris.
  2. Keep hazardous materials separate. Paint, solvents, adhesives and fuel cannot go in a debris load.
  3. Choose a removal method: haul it yourself, rent a bin, or book load-based debris pickups as the job progresses.
  4. Keep records if your client or project needs proof of disposal.

Bin rental vs debris pickup

A bin makes sense when…

  • The job runs for weeks and creates debris daily
  • There is space on the driveway or site for the bin
  • Your crew does the loading

Debris pickup makes sense when…

  • Debris comes out in one or two big pushes (demolition day, tear-out)
  • There is no room for a bin, or a bin needs a permit on the street
  • You want a crew to load it so your trades stay on the work

Load-based pickups are priced by truck volume. Published Calgary rates we reviewed in October 2026 run about $450–$600+ per full truckload for regular debris. Heavy materials are priced separately; one Calgary list shows a heavy-material full truck bed at $449. These are market ranges; your hauler confirms your price.

Demolition debris removal

Demolition creates the heaviest and most mixed debris: framing lumber, drywall, insulation, flooring, fixtures, concrete and brick. Two things to plan for:

  • Weight: concrete, brick, tile and plaster fill a truck’s weight limit fast. Expect weight-based pricing.
  • Hazardous materials: buildings of older construction may contain asbestos in drywall compound, plaster, flooring, insulation or pipe wrap. Testing before demolition is a legal requirement in many cases, and asbestos must be removed by a qualified abatement contractor. Standard junk haulers do not take it.

Building and construction debris we commonly see

  • Drywall offcuts and tear-out
  • Framing lumber, plywood and OSB
  • Flooring: carpet, underlay, laminate, hardwood
  • Cabinets, countertops and fixtures
  • Windows and doors
  • Roofing shingles (heavy, usually priced by weight)
  • Concrete, brick and tile (heavy, usually priced by weight)
  • Packaging, pallets and job-site trash

Frequently asked questions

How do I get rid of construction debris in Calgary?

Separate what you can: Calgary landfills charge less for clean drywall and recyclable wood ($90/tonne in 2026) than for mixed garbage ($113/tonne). Then either haul it yourself, rent a bin, or book a load-based debris pickup.

What is the City of Calgary rate for drywall?

The 2026 residential rate for drywall is $90 per tonne. Recyclable wood is also $90 per tonne and scrap metal $113 per tonne.

Do debris haulers take concrete and shingles?

Many do, but heavy materials are usually priced by weight or by a separate heavy-load rate. One Calgary price list we reviewed shows a heavy-material full truck bed at $449. Always mention heavy materials in your request.

Is demolition debris handled differently?

Demolition debris can include materials that need testing before disposal, such as asbestos in older buildings. Standard junk haulers do not take asbestos; that requires a specialist abatement contractor.
