Junk Removal Calgary: Real Prices, Local Rules and Free Quotes

Calgary has no curbside pickup for sofas, mattresses or appliances, so most bulky junk leaves by private hauler or a trip to the landfill. This guide shows what Calgary junk removal typically costs, what the City charges if you do it yourself, and lets you request a free quote from an independent local hauler in one step.

How much does junk removal cost in Calgary?

Most Calgary junk removal companies price by how much space your items take up in the truck, not by the hour. The table below shows typical published Calgary hauler rates, researched in October 2026. These are market ranges from public price pages, not TrueNorth Junk Removal prices. The hauler you are matched with sets and confirms the binding price.

Job sizeTypical published Calgary rangeWhat fits (rough guide)
Minimum / single small item$75 – $110One chair, a few bags, one small appliance
About 1/4 truckload$149 – $199One sofa plus a few boxes, or a mattress set and a dresser
About 1/2 truckload$200 – $300Contents of a small bedroom, or a light garage clear-out
About 3/4 truckload$300 – $450A cluttered basement room or a one-car garage
Full truckload$450 – $600+Large cleanouts, estates, renovation debris

Source: published price pages of three Calgary junk removal companies (Local Lads Junk Removal, Mighty Junk and Legacy Junk Removal), checked October 2026. Some list prices before GST. Prices from other companies, including national franchises, may fall outside these ranges. Item surcharges (for example fridges, mattresses and tires) can apply.

Single items have their own going rates. One Calgary price list shows a mattress at $75 ($95 with its disposal fee), a fridge at $90 ($110 with the refrigerant fee), a piano from $239 and a hot tub from $309. What a do-it-yourself landfill trip costs

If you have a truck or trailer, you can take junk to a City of Calgary landfill yourself. The City’s 2026 residential rates are:

MaterialCity of Calgary 2026 rate
Basic sanitary waste (household garbage, furniture)$113 per tonne, or a flat $25 per load under 250 kg
Fridges, freezers, A/C units (refrigerant removal)$17 per item plus weight charges
Hard-to-handle loads (bulky, low weight or special handling)$275 surcharge per load
Drywall / recyclable wood$90 per tonne
Scrap metal$113 per tonne
Yard waste$50 per tonne
Electronics, tires, household hazardous waste, clothingFree for residents

The fee is only part of the cost. You also need a suitable vehicle, tie-downs and tarps, help lifting heavy items, and time for the round trip and the scale line. For one or two bulky items with no truck, a hauler is usually simpler. For a trailer of light garbage, DIY can be cheaper.

What to do with common items in Calgary

Here is a quick guide to the items people most often need gone, with the cheapest and easiest option for each.

Furniture: couches, sectionals, dressers, beds

City garbage trucks do not take bulky furniture. Good-condition pieces may be accepted by a charity, sometimes with free pickup. Worn or broken furniture goes to a City landfill or to a free Community Cleanup event (held on set dates from spring to early fall). Otherwise, a hauler carries it out for you. See furniture and couch removal in Calgary and free furniture donation options.

Appliances: fridges, freezers, washers, stoves

Fridges, freezers, water coolers and air conditioners contain refrigerant. The City charges a $17 refrigerant removal surcharge on each one, even if the refrigerant has already been removed, plus weight charges. Washers, dryers and stoves are scrap metal, and several private scrap recyclers in Calgary accept them. More in our appliance removal guide.

Mattresses and box springs

Calgary will not collect mattresses at the curb. The City recommends donating usable mattresses, taking unusable ones to an Eco Centre (charges apply), or using an independent recycler such as Re-Matt. Community Cleanup events also accept old mattresses. Compare every option on our mattress disposal page.

TVs and electronics

Electronics recycling in Calgary is free at City Eco Centres when the electronics are brought on their own. Mixing them with other garbage triggers charges. Do not put TVs in your black cart. See electronics recycling in Calgary.

These are the main public places to take junk in Calgary. Hours and accepted materials change, so check calgary.ca before you go.

City landfills and Eco Centres

  • East Calgary Landfill and Eco Centre (southeast)
  • Shepard Landfill and Eco Centre (southeast; closed Sundays)
  • Spyhill Landfill and Eco Centre (northwest; closed Sundays)

All three take residential garbage, bulky items, some recyclables and household hazardous waste. Eco Centres are the City’s recommended drop-off for furniture, appliances and construction materials.

Reuse and recycling

  • Community Cleanup events: free drop-off for furniture, mattresses and toilets on set dates, roughly April to September (calgary.ca/cleanups)
  • Re-Matt: independent mattress recycler (fees may apply)
  • Charities: Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Calgary Inter-Faith Furniture Society, Women in Need Society (WINS) and Calgary Drop-In Centre accept some donations; check each one’s current rules
  • Scrap metal recyclers: the City lists Recon Metal, Calgary Metal, Federal Metals, Blackfoot Metals and Westcan Recyclers for appliances

Key Calgary fact: the City has no curbside bulky-item pickup. Outside of Community Cleanup dates, if an item does not fit in your black cart, you either drive it to an Eco Centre or pay someone to take it. That is why private junk removal is so common here. See our guide to garbage pickup in Calgary.

Referral service vs calling a hauler directly

TrueNorth Junk Removal is a referral service. We want to be clear about what that means, because it affects you.

What we do

  • Publish practical, sourced guides on Calgary junk removal prices and rules
  • Take your request once and pass it to an independent local hauler
  • Stay free for customers: haulers pay us for introductions

What we do not do

  • We do not own trucks, employ crews or haul junk
  • We do not set the final price; the hauler does
  • We do not verify licences or insurance on your behalf, so please confirm them with your hauler

Calling a hauler directly is a fine choice too, especially if you already have one you trust. Using a referral service saves you calling around when you do not know who covers your area or who is free this week. Either way, ask for a written price that includes labour, disposal and any item surcharges before the crew starts loading. More on our about page.

Junk removal across Calgary and nearby communities

Requests are accepted from across the city and the nearby communities below:

  • Calgary
  • Airdrie
  • Cochrane
  • Okotoks
  • Chestermere

Calgary has a mix of inner-city homes with tight alleys and basement stairs, and newer suburbs with attached garages. Access affects price, so mention alley or front-street access and any stairs. The three City Eco Centres (Spyhill in the northwest, East Calgary and Shepard in the southeast) mean disposal is never far from any quadrant.

Airdrie, just north on the QEII, and Chestermere, just east, are close enough that Calgary-based haulers often cover them. Cochrane to the west and Okotoks to the south are a longer drive, so booking a combined load is usually better value than several small pickups. Each town runs its own waste program, which is covered on our service area page.

How to get a lower junk removal price

  • Book one combined load. Two quarter loads on different days cost more than one half load.
  • Pull free-to-drop items first. Electronics, tires and household hazardous waste are free at City sites for residents.
  • Donate or sell what is usable. Good furniture may be collected by a charity for free.
  • Improve access. One Calgary price list offers 10% off for curbside or alley pickup.
  • Be specific. Photos and a list help the hauler quote accurately, so the price does not change on the day.
  • Separate heavy materials. Concrete, soil, shingles and tile are often priced by weight; mention them up front.

How to choose the best junk removal company in Calgary

There are dozens of junk removal companies in Calgary, from national franchises to one-truck local crews, and the best junk removal Calgary offers for your job is not always the cheapest. Use this checklist when choosing a junk removal company Calgary residents can rely on, or when comparing junk removal services Calgary homeowners use:

  • Clear, written price that says what is included (labour, disposal, surcharges, GST) and what could change it
  • City of Calgary business licence and liability insurance, which the company should confirm when asked
  • Honest disposal: where items go (donation, recycling, landfill) and no cash-only “dump it anywhere” offers
  • Reviews you can trust on independent platforms, with recent dates and detail
  • Fit for the job: some crews specialise in single items, others in estates, renovation debris or commercial work

TrueNorth Junk Removal passes your request to an independent local company. You still get to check these points and decide before any work starts.

Junk removal in Calgary: frequently asked questions

How much does junk removal cost in Calgary?

Published Calgary hauler prices we reviewed in October 2026 start around $75–$110 for a minimum or single small item, roughly $200–$300 for a half truckload and about $450–$600+ for a full truckload. Your hauler confirms the binding price on site. See the full junk removal cost guide.

Does the City of Calgary pick up large items like couches?

No. City garbage trucks do not collect bulky items such as sofas or mattresses on regular routes. Your options are a City landfill / Eco Centre (fees apply), a seasonal Community Cleanup event, donation, or a private junk removal company.

Is TrueNorth Junk Removal a junk removal company?

No. TrueNorth Junk Removal is a referral service. We do not own trucks or haul junk. We pass your request to an independent local junk removal company, which quotes, removes and disposes of your items. Our service is free for customers; haulers pay us for introductions.

Can junk removal companies pick up from inside my home?

Yes. Full-service junk removal usually includes carrying items out of rooms, basements and garages, so you do not have to move anything to the curb. Mention stairs, tight hallways or elevators in your request so the price reflects access.

Can junk removal companies remove single items?

Yes. Most Calgary haulers take single items such as one couch, mattress or fridge, usually at a minimum charge. Published single-item prices we reviewed start around $75 for a mattress and $90–$110 for a fridge including the refrigerant fee.

How do I find same-day junk removal in Calgary?

Request your quote early in the day and give a clear description (or photos) of the items and access. Same-day slots depend on each hauler’s schedule, so flexibility on the time window helps. We pass urgent requests on as soon as they arrive.

What is the best junk removal service in Calgary?

The best fit is a company that gives a clear upfront price, is licensed and insured, explains where your items go, and has recent genuine reviews. Ask for the price in writing and confirm what is included (labour, disposal, surcharges) before the crew starts.

Is there a free junk removal service in Calgary?

Sometimes. Charities may pick up good-condition furniture for free, scrap metal recyclers may take some appliances, and the City runs free Community Cleanup events in spring and summer. Paid haulers handle everything else. See free furniture removal options.

What junk removal companies are eco-friendly?

Look for haulers that sort loads, donate usable items, and recycle metal, electronics, drywall and wood instead of landfilling everything. Calgary landfills recycle electronics, tires and scrap metal, so ask the hauler what they divert and where.

What will junk removal companies not take?

Most exclude hazardous materials such as paint, solvents, propane tanks, chemicals, asbestos and medical waste. Calgary residents can drop household hazardous waste at City drop-off locations for free. See what we take.

Do I need to be home for junk removal?

Not always. Many haulers can collect items left in an agreed spot such as a driveway, alley or open garage, and take payment by phone or online. Confirm this with your hauler in advance.

Which areas near Calgary are covered?

Requests are accepted from Calgary and nearby Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks and Chestermere. See the service area page.

How much does it cost to take junk to a Calgary landfill myself?

For residential garbage in 2026, the City of Calgary charges $113 per tonne, with a flat $25 per load under 250 kg. Fridges and freezers add a $17 refrigerant removal surcharge per item, and bulky low-weight loads can carry a $275 hard-to-handle surcharge.

Should I check a hauler’s licence and insurance?

Yes. Before work starts, ask the hauler to confirm it holds a valid City of Calgary business licence and liability insurance, and get the price in writing. TrueNorth Junk Removal does not verify these on your behalf.

How long does a junk removal job take?

A single item can take 15–30 minutes. A full garage or basement often takes two to four hours, depending on volume, stairs and how much sorting is needed.

Ready to clear it out?

Whether it is one fridge or a full basement, the fastest way to a real price is to describe the job once. Use the form at the top of this page or our quote page. A local hauler confirms the price before anything moves.
